we’re joined by Lenora Whitfield, heroine of Judy Baker’s western romance, Better She Lie, a Silver Sage Creek Novel.
What was your life like
before your author started pulling your strings?
I spent my life in an orphanage with little food,
dirty clothes, and demands from a headmistress. When I was fourteen, I was
adopted by a wealthy family in Atlanta. My life was no different than the
orphanage. I worked as a slave in the vineyards until I was almost sixteen,
then I was taken to the plantation house to aid the mistress in all duties,
including teaching the children. Living in the wealthy plantation house and
being abused by the master, my life went from bad to worse. I ran away, lived on the streets of Atlanta for two
years in dirt and grim, disguised as a boy. Then my author stepped in.
What’s the
one trait you like most about yourself?
Adapting to what life throws at me. While on the
street I learned to be independent. Now, I will think for myself and find a
life worth living.
What do you
like least about yourself?
I’ve gone and murdered. Now, I’m a murderer.
What is the
strangest thing your author has had you do or had happen to you?
She decided I was to become a lady – that made me
laugh.
What is
your greatest fear?
Remembering all my lies.
What makes
you happy?
The baby and the folks in the town. They treat me
like a real human being.
If you
could rewrite a part of your story, what would it be? Why?
That I never committed murder. Living a lie is hard
enough without the burden of knowing I took a life.
Of the other characters in
your book, which one bugs you the most? Why?
The bounty hunter, of course. He looks at me with
suspicion. He raddles my nerves when looking at me with those accusing eyes.
Of the other characters in
your book, which one would you love to trade places
with? Why?
That’s easy. Anna. Anna is surrounded by the love
of her parents, brothers and her husband. She knows how to return their love
and is respected by the entire town. I know nothing of being loved or how to return
such emotions to another.
