AN INTERVIEW WITH SPENCER KINGSLEY FROM ROMANCE AUTHOR LAURA HALEY-McNEIL'S BEAUMONT BRIDES SERIES

Today we sit down for a chat with Spencer Kingsley from Laura Haley-McNeil’s Beaumont Brides series.

What was your life like before your author started pulling your strings? Uncomplicated. I’m the heir to Hollywood Royalty, so the doors open wide for me. Though I worked hard, my career was setchoice of scripts, top billing in every film. Nothing was missing.

What’s the one trait you like most about yourself?
I like people. I like being around people and I like helping people. Hollywood can be a great place to meet and be with people. My life is good. Why not share it with others? If I can give someone a boost in their career, that’s a good feeling. Being a Kingsley means I didn’t have to struggle through the ranks like most who come to Hollywood, so why not open the doors for someone who has the talent, but just needs a break?

What do you like least about yourself?
My reputation for helping others is far and wide and some people take advantage. I learned the hard way that not everyone sees past my pedigree. My first love was on that list. I had thought we’d marry start a family, but she had other ideas. That’s when I built that wall around my heart. Now relationships are strictly a business deal. Wish I remembered that when background actor Addison Duvall walked onto the set. I knew she was trouble and the walls went up. Funny how she knew what she wanted and how to get it. Even funnier, unlike other women, her plan didn’t include me.

What is the strangest thing your author has had you do or had happen to you?
I have to set my grandmother straight. During her Hollywood heyday, Mirabelle La Marr Kingsley was once America’s Sweetheart. That doesn’t mean she’s a guru when it comes to love. I’m careful and my life is exactly what I want it to be. When I’m on location in Mozambique and the set is rained out, who suddenly wants to video chat with me and let me know Addison’s latest social postings? I didn’t put 15,000 miles between Addison and me for nothing. But leave it to Gran to teach me technology can make me want the woman I successfully put out of my mind … and heart. If I hadn’t seen Addison, I’d be fine.

Do you argue with your author? If so, what do you argue about?
I had everything figured out until Addison appeared on the scene. She wasn’t like the other women. She came to Hollywood with her musical laugh, her bouncy enthusiasm and her forthrightness. She speaks her mind, no matter the consequences. I kind of like that … a lot.

What is your greatest fear?
When I realized I had it all―a great career, a beautiful woman on my arm when the cameras click, the mansion on the hill. Is that all there is? What about sharing what I have with someone else? And not just anyone. I know there are plenty of women out there who would gladly share my life, but if I share it with someone else, it has to be with someone special. Whenever I think that, I see Addison’s bright face, smell her subtle scent and hear her delightful laugh. What if I spend the rest of my life without Addison being a part of it? Can I be happy with just things? I may have to try.

What makes you happy?
Did I know true happiness before Addison walked onto the set? I had a great life. I was about to announce my engagement to supermodel Daisy. I was the envy of everyone in town, but what is that warmth rising in my chest whenever I’m near Addison? I knew being married to just anyone wouldn’t make me happy. That’s why I avoided marriage. When I’m with Addison, pure joy washes over me like waves on the beach.

If you could rewrite a part of your story, what would it be? Why?
That night Addison and I strolled along the beach. I knew what I felt for her, but I couldn’t deny the past. Another woman had made me happy, but when she had attained the fame she sought, she moved on. If I answered the yearning in my heart, and let Addison inside, what would be the risk? She wanted a career and I’ve known what women who want to be stars can do. If I hadn’t walked away that night, I’d open myself up to pain. I promised myself I’d never do that again.

Of the other characters in your book, which one bugs you the most? Why?
Gran thinks that everyone should be as happy as she was when Pop was alive. She doesn’t understand that was a different time, back when there was innocence in Hollywood and true love wasn’t just a happily ever after ending in one of her films. Times have changed. Try telling that to a Hollywood legend.

Of the other characters in your book, which one would you love to trade places with? Why?
Gran knew pure happiness. She and Pop adored each other. Even after fifty years together, they still flirted and laughed like a young couple in love. Their love endured all the heartache Hollywood dished out, but they devoted themselves to each other and their children. I’ve never seen a happier couple.

Tell us a little something about your author. Where can readers find her website/blog?
Laura Haley-McNeil has two books scheduled for later this year. The Billionaire’s Christmas Gift is Book 1 in the Christmas Billionaires Series. Then it’s back to the Crystal Creek Ranch with Book 8 and a chance to meet Josh and Lily and get a taste of the rodeo circuit. Catch up with Laura at her website

What's next for you?
Addison’s blended family always has something going on. Her five sisters and six stepbrothers are setting off to make their mark in the world, but sometimes the best laid plans have a way of letting you know they aren’t that great. Try as the Duvalls and Lowes might, they can’t seem to avoid that crazy little thing called love. Keep an eye out for Book 4. Logan’s about to discover his getaway vacation takes him on a trip that was definitely not on his agenda.

Call It Love
Beaumont Brides, Book 3

A kiss isn’t just a kiss …

Struggling actress Addison Duvall hustles background acting jobs at the Hollywood studios in hopes for her big break. When she’s cast as the stand in for the lead actress in a blockbuster spy film, she can’t believe her luck. The surprises rush in―her first test shot is with Hollywood heartthrob Spencer Kingsley. Her even bigger surprise is when the director yells, “Action!”  and Spencer presses his lips to hers in a kiss.

Behind Spencer’s Hollywood façade hides the secret pain no one suspects. He’s the first to take a risk except when it comes to his heart. He can’t deny he and Addison have chemistry―chemistry onscreen and off―and he’s  tempted to lower his guard. She seems real, not like the women he usually meets.

Once Addison’s star rises, so do Spencer’s doubts. She’s no different than the others looking for the connection to catapult their careers. He won’t let another woman damage his heart. His decision made, Spencer wishes her success.

But it’s already too late. How does he heal this Addison shaped hole in his heart? Should he risk more heartbreak for another chance at love?

AN INTERVIEW WITH ROMANCE AUTHOR ANN EVERETT

Today we sit down for a visit with contemporary romance, new adult romance, and humorous romantic suspense author Ann Everett. Learn more about Ann and her books at her website and blog.

Ann is giving away five awesome prize packages through tomorrow. Click here to enter.

When did you realize you wanted to write novels?
I never intended to write novels. Only short stories to enter in contests. However, one of my shorts suddenly became 25,000 words and I wasn’t done with it, so it had to be a book.

How long did it take you to realize your dream of publication?
Again, I never wanted to be published. But I did want to improve my writing, so I joined a writing website. One of my readers there suggested I submit (the short story that turned into a book) to a small press in her area that happened to be taking open submissions. I did, and they accepted.

Are you traditionally published, indie published, or a hybrid author?
Hybrid. I was originally published by the small press I mentioned above. During my 3-year contract with them, I learned a lot about self-publishing. When my contract ended, I reclaimed the rights to the two books they had and added three more I’d written and self-published all five. Then in 2016, I submitted a book to the Kindle Scout program, and Amazon’s imprint, Kindle Press published it.

Where do you write?
I have a corner in my spare bedroom that serves as my office.

Is silence golden, or do you need music to write by? What kind?
I prefer silence, but since I score my stories, sometimes I listen to the song I’ve chosen for a particular scene just to get me “in the mood.”

How much of your plots and characters are drawn from real life? From your life in particular?
In my humorous mystery series, Tizzy/Ridge Trilogy, a whole lot of it comes from my real life. Most of the characters in those stories are people I know or family members. The stories even take place in the town where I grew up, Brownsboro, Texas. Since my sister and I both love to bake/cook, I made us owners of Sweet Thang Bakery. Since it’s fiction, I made us younger and gave us bigger boobs!!

Describe your process for naming your character?
This is a biggie for me. Because Texas is known for our crazy names, I spend a lot of time choosing them…especially for secondary characters. In my latest book, True, Joy Dell Dalton has a storyline, although she is not the main character. That is a great Texas double name!

Real settings or fictional towns?
Mostly real, but in my Bluebird, Texas Romance series, Bluebird is fictional.

What’s the quirkiest quirk one of your characters has?
In just about every book, at least one of my characters is quirky. In my most recent series, Chirp, main character, Blaze is on the spectrum, (Asperger’s syndrome) so she has no filters and says what she thinks. In True, the protagonist writes crazy songs…like, There was Nothing Between us but Your Penis! So, she’s pretty quirky.

What’s your quirkiest quirk?
Oh, I have so many, and I give most of them to my characters. If I forget something, I won’t turn around and go back home. I don’t do turnarounds. Bad luck.

If you could have written any book (one that someone else has already written,) which one would it be? Why?
Any by either Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Jennifer Crusie. I love everything they’ve written. They both write multiple storyline stories, which I started doing with the Bluebird, Texas series. Since I love to read that type of story, I discovered I love writing them as well. Each of the books in that series has three romances happening at the same time.

Everyone at some point wishes for a do-over. What’s yours?
If you’re talking about books, then…all of them! I did rewrite part of the first book I published. Even added a character! After that, I vowed not to read any of my books again once I hit publish! I just have to let them go.

If you’re talking about life, it would be to finish my college degree. I should have. Not really a regret, but a missed opportunity.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Lord, I have so many. But one of my main peeves is people who are constantly late…like my sister. She is never on time. It bugs the crap out of me!

You’re stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
Good Internet connection. Computer. Credit card.

What was the worst job you’ve ever held?
“Worst” can cover so many things. I had one job where the boss was a total idiot, one job with more drama than necessary, and one where office-politics played into everything. The crazy thing is I didn’t hate any of them. I’ve usually worked two jobs for most of my life. A day job, then a part-time night job. I’ve owned a toy store, a gift shop, a lawn and landscape business, and a cleaning service. The hardest was the lawn service. Laying grass (sod) in Texas heat is no picnic! So, I guess that would win the “Worst Prize.”

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?
This is the question where I think I should answer with some really deep title, but I no longer read books like that. Since I write romance, I mostly read romance. But if I had to choose from every book I’ve read in my life, it would have to be The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. In a few pages, he sums up how we’re willing to give up everything for someone we love. That’s a true romance story.

Ocean or mountains?
I like looking at pictures of both, but since I’m terrified of water and heights, I don’t want to be at either! No cruises for me. No vacations in a majestic setting.

City girl/guy or country girl/guy?
Country girl all the way. I grew up in a town with 304 people. Everyone knew everyone. You’d think I’d want to experience something bigger, but nope. I thought the world stopped at the city limit sign and never wanted to live anywhere else. I’ve lived in cities and liked of all of them. Lubbock, Texas is my favorite. I now live in a town of about 15,000…that’s plenty big for a girl raised in Podunk!

What’s on the horizon for you?
That’s the beauty of life. We never know.

True
Sometimes it takes losing everything…

True Shanahan must be the unluckiest woman in the world. Either that or she’s cursed. After another failed relationship, True leaves Dallas with a broken heart and new attitude. It’s time to walk on the wild side. But when she makes a wrong turn and ends up in Bluebird, Texas, the only man she wants is anything but reckless.

…to find all you’ve ever wanted.

Ritter Malone is the town’s favorite son and has the local hero awards to prove it. Seems he’s always in the right place at the right time. But when he crosses paths with True, his life takes a turn he never sees coming. Her songwriting skills may be questionable, but her ability to turn him inside out is indisputable.

Welcome to Bluebird, Texas.

Where a chance meeting gives two people a chance at love.

BOOK CLUB FRIDAY--GUEST AUTHOR DAKOTA MADISON

USA Today bestselling author Dakota Madison is a writer of many facing, also writing as Savannah Young, Ren Monterrey and Sierra Avalon, in various romance sub-genres, including contemporary romance, new adult romance, midlife romance, and romantic suspense. Today she sits down for an interview with us. Learn more about Dakota at her website.

When did you realize you wanted to write novels?
As soon as I learned to read I immediately wanted to write my own books!

How long did it take you to realize your dream of publication?
I actually had some stage plays published before my first novel was published in 2002.

Are you traditionally published, indie published, or a hybrid author?
I own my own publishing company, Short on Time Books. We published my work as well as the work of 16 other authors.

Where do you write?
In my living room, or in bed!

Is silence golden, or do you need music to write by? What kind?
I can only write in silence.

How much of your plots and characters are drawn from real life? From your life in particular?
I tend to write a lot about college professors, or psychologists. I happen to be a psychology professor! I think the emotional reality of my books is drawn from my life more so than actual characters or plots.

Describe your process for naming your character?
I made use of a lot of “baby name” websites.

Real settings or fictional towns?
I fictionalize real towns. I base the towns on places I know, but change the names and add the characteristics I want to them.

What’s the quirkiest quirk one of your characters has?
The most fun I had was writing Max in Rye Must Die. He loves to sing along with songs, but always mixes up the song lyrics.

What’s your quirkiest quirk?
I have too many to mention. One quirk I have is that I cannot lay my head on a pillowcase that has any wrinkles on it. The case has to be completely smooth and wrinkle free.

If you could have written any book (one that someone else has already written,) which one would it be? Why?
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lisbeth Salander is such a cool character.

Everyone at some point wishes for a do-over. What’s yours?
I would never have started using a pen name. Now I’m stuck with four of them!

What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Right now it’s service providers who think they can treat authors like trash because they have more business than they can handle. The minute you believe you can afford to lose customers is the minute your business is doomed to fail.

You’re stranded on a deserted island. What are your three must-haves?
Chapstick, my husband, our bloodhounds.

What was the worst job you’ve ever held?
Delivering phonebooks.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Ocean or mountains?
Can’t I have both?

City girl/guy or country girl/guy?
I seem to always find myself living “out in the country” but outside of a major city. Best of both worlds.

What’s on the horizon for you?
Right now I’m working on more books for my Love in Midlife romance series.

The Killer in You
A Love in Midlife Romance (Each full-length novel in Dakota Madison's Love in Midlife romance series features one of the graduates of Bookman College attending their 25th reunion.)

#COOKING WITH CLORIS--GUEST AUTHOR VICTORIA ADAMS & EVERYTHING #CHOCOLATE

Victoria Adams has been penning stories since she was a little girl. Now she’s the published author of contemporary romances and contemporary new adult romances. She’s also the only author I’ve ever know who studies Raqs Sharqi, Egyptian belly dance, (unless some of our other guest authors have been holding out on me!) Learn more about Victoria and her books at her website.

I’m a chocolate lover. I have books and books of the history of chocolate and how to work with chocolate and recipes dedicated to chocolate. I just love typing the word—chocolate. One of my special desserts that dinner guests ask for is Trinity Parfait—3 ingredients: chocolate,   whipping cream and sugar. You vary the amount of chocolate for the layers which rise up from the bottom: dark chocolate then a lighter chocolate and at the top - chocolate speckled whipped cream. (I think I just put on a pound typing this.)
For someone who might not be as addicted to theobroma cacao—food of the Gods—as I am (although I am shocked that there might be such a person!) here are a few fun facts about my favorite food.

1. Chocolate is in its own food group. Okay…maybe that’s my fact and not based in actual fact. But chocolate is good for you. It’s repudiated to be an antioxidant and does have trace amounts of the mineral copper which is good for our bodies. But this doesn’t mean gobbling down corner store chocolate bars.  A specialty store will offer designer chocolates of various percentages. Start low and build up your taste buds to the 80% range. It is an acquired taste.

2. There are three common species of Cacao trees: Criollo (Central America,) Forastero (West Africa, South America,) and Trinitario (all cacao regions.)

3. Cacao trees can only grow within a tight region 20 degrees north and south of the equator.

4. The top cacao production countries are Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Brazil, Ecuador and Mexico.

5. White chocolate is NOT chocolate.  To be chocolate, it should have cocoa solids as well as cocoa butter. However, white chocolate has only cocoa butter, and no cocoa solids.

Where is this leading to? In my latest story, my hero and heroine have dinner at his mansion and he treats her to a fabulous dessert—Madagascar vanilla ice cream drizzled with a hot fudge sauce made with fifteen different kinds of cacao, and the whole thing is presented in a solid gold goblet topped off with edible gold!

Cacao is not a spelling mistake.  Cacao is what the base chocolate comes from. It is from the Olmec language (pre Mayan.) There is some train of thought in the chocolate world that cocoa is actually just a misspelling of the word cacao and since it is easier to pronounce that version stuck. But for a chocolate foodie the proper word is cacao.
