A LABOR DAY TREAT

Happy Labor Day! We hope everyone enjoys the last holiday weekend of the summer. Anastasia and the gang are taking a long weekend, but for those of you who have stopped by, here are some fun facts about Labor Day and keep reading for a Labor Day treat:

·      New York City was the setting for the first Labor Day which occurred on Tuesday Sept. 5, 1882 and was organized by the Central Labor Union.
·      More than 10,000 workers protesting 16 hour workdays marched in the first Labor Day parade.
·      Two years later, in 1884 the observance of Labor Day moved to the first Monday in September as other labor groups were encouraged to take part.
·      June 1894, Congress voted to make Labor Day a national federal holiday.
·      The photo above is of a Labor Day workers' pledge during WWII. Note the misspelling of "Material." Were were the editors?
For stopping by today, we're giving away a promo code for a free download of the audiobook version of Scrapbook of Murder, the sixth book in the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery Series. To enter, post a comment about your Labor Day plans.

Scrapbook of Murder

An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery, Book 6

Crafts and murder don’t normally go hand-in-hand, but “normal” deserted crafts editor Anastasia Pollack’s world nearly a year ago. Now, tripping over dead bodies seems to be the “new normal” for this reluctant amateur sleuth.

When the daughter of a murdered neighbor asks Anastasia to create a family scrapbook from old photographs and memorabilia discovered in a battered suitcase, she agrees—not only out of friendship but also from a sense of guilt over the older woman’s death. However, as Anastasia begins sorting through the contents of the suitcase, she discovers a letter revealing a fifty-year-old secret, one that unearths a long-buried scandal and unleashes a killer. Suddenly Anastasia is back in sleuthing mode as she races to prevent a suitcase full of trouble from leading to more deaths.

READING WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED

Image by Luisella Planeta from Pixabay

Do you enjoy listening to audiobooks? They’re great for long car trips, commuting to work on the train or bus, getting your steps in while out walking or on the treadmill, doing housework, preparing meals, or even relaxing with a good book when you want to read with your eyes closed.

A year ago, my author Lois Winston entered into a partnership with narrator/producer Alex Bitton-Bailey to put the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries (those books Lois writes about me) out as audiobooks. Ever since, they’ve been making steady progress. A Stitch to Die For, the fifth book in the series, is the latest audiobook available through Audible, iTunes, and Amazon. Scrapbook of Murder, the sixth book in the series, is currently in production.

When Lois was searching for a narrator, she wanted to find someone with the voice she heard in her head—my voice. We both wanted Tina Fey because…well, she’s Tina Fey, and if Lois ever options the TV or movie rights to the series, we both think Tina Fey should play me. (It’s one of the few things Lois and I agree on.)

However, since Tina Fey wasn’t an option, Alex came the closest to the voice in Lois’s head, and as it turns out, Alex loves me and agreed to voice the entire series. Lois and I were both thrilled. Alex is a great narrator and wonderful to work with.

And if your answer to the question I asked at the beginning of this piece was yes, you’re in luck. Lois has a limited number of US and UK promo codes for free downloads of the audiobook of A Stitch to Die For. Post a comment to the blog for a chance to receive one.

A Stitch to Die For

An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery, Book 5

Ever since her husband died and left her in debt equal to the gross national product of Uzbekistan, magazine crafts editor and reluctant amateur sleuth Anastasia Pollack has stumbled across one dead body after another—but always in work-related settings. When a killer targets the elderly nasty neighbor who lives across the street from her, murder strikes too close to home. Couple that with a series of unsettling events days before Halloween, and Anastasia begins to wonder if someone is sending her a deadly message.

#COOKING WITH CLORIS--GUEST AUTHOR JUDY PENZ SHELUK SHARES PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE RECIPE

With the holidays coming up we've allowed Cloris another spot this week to feature one more author who bakes. After all, you can never have too many Christmas cookies, right?

Judy Penz Sheluk writes the Glass Dolphin Mysteries and the Marketville Mysteries, and her short crime fiction has appeared in several anthologies. Learn more about Judy and her books at her website/blog.

Judy is offering a giveaway to a lucky reader. Click here to sign up for her newsletter before December 20th for a chance to win an Audible.com audiobook of either The Hanged Man’s Noose or Skeletons in the Attic (winner’s choice).

While I don’t write the sort of books that contain cats, crafts or cookie recipes (my amateur sleuth mysteries have bit more of an edge), like me, my protagonists have a sweet tooth, at least when it comes to cookies. When I visited last December, I shared a recipe for my mom’s Almond Crescents, a to-die for shortbread that Arabella Carpenter of The Hanged Man’s Noose would surely appreciates. You can find that recipe here.

In Skeletons in the Attic: A Marketville Mystery, my protagonist, Calamity (Callie) Barnstable, is searching for clues that might help her find out more about her mother—a woman who disappeared thirty years earlier, when Callie was just six-years-old. As Callie digs through a box of her mother’s belongings, she finds a peanut butter cookie recipe that bears a striking resemblance to the recipe my mom used. Maybe it’s the childhood memory of baking with my mother, but I truly believe these are the best peanut butter cookies you’ll ever taste.

Anneliese’s Best Ever Peanut Butter Cookies

Ingredients:
2-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy; I prefer smooth, but if you like bits of peanut in your cookies, the crunchy peanut butter works well)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla (real vanilla, not the imitation stuff) Cooking spray

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and set aside. Beat butter, peanut butter and white and brown sugar with mixer until light and fluffy. Blend in eggs and vanilla. Gradually add flour mixture, beating well after each addition.

Drop a tablespoon of cookie dough 2 inches apart onto baking sheets sprayed with cooking spray. Flatten each cookie in a crisscross pattern with the tines of a fork.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks. Allow to cool completely.

Skeletons in the Attic, a Marketville Mystery

What goes on behind closed doors doesn’t always stay there…

Calamity (Callie) Barnstable isn’t surprised to learn she’s the sole beneficiary of her late father’s estate, though she is shocked to discover she has inherited a house in the town of Marketville—a house she didn’t know existed. However, there are conditions attached to Callie’s inheritance: she must move to Marketville, live in the house, and solve her mother’s murder.

Callie’s not keen on dredging up a thirty-year-old mystery, but if she doesn’t do it, there’s a scheming psychic named Misty Rivers who is more than happy to expose the Barnstable family secrets. Determined to thwart Misty and fulfill her father’s wishes, Callie accepts the challenge. But is she ready to face the skeletons hidden in the attic?
