BEAUTY WITH NICOLE

Wrinkles. They’re the first signs of aging for most of us, creeping up on us far too early around our eyes and mouth. Laugh lines by any other name are still wrinkles.

Dermatologists have built an industry around reducing wrinkles. There’s botox, lasers, peels, microdermabrasion, and hundreds of creams, gels, oils, and ointments—all of which cost money. Sometimes quite a bit of money.

But what if you could prevent wrinkles before they start, rather than trying to reduce them after they appear? To some extent you can. Of course, we all know how important it is to avoid tanning and smoking. However, there are other preventative measures we can take, and some of them are incredibly easy and simple and also cost nothing.

First, r epetitive external pressure on your skin and repetitive facial muscle movements cause crinkling of the skin. Don’t drink from a straw. Don’t chew gum. Don’t stretch your skin while putting on or taking off makeup. And don’t sleep with your face in your pillow. Sleep on your back instead.

Get up and move. Exercise is good for your skin.

Wear sunglasses to avoid squinting when outdoors.

Stop looking down at your phone all the time. All that constant texting is giving you neck wrinkles.

And finally, watch what you eat. Consume foods rich in antioxidants and avoid refined sugar.

BEAUTY WITH NICOLE--WRINKLE PREVENTION

If you don’t know by now to use sunscreen to protect yourself from skin cancer, you’ve probably been living someplace that rarely sees sunlight. For years conventional wisdom has also said that sunscreen protects our skin from aging. And who wants wrinkles, right? Cute laugh lines grow up to be deep crevices, and most of us would like to delay that part of our lives for as long as possible.

Now there’s scientific data to back up that conventional wisdom. In a 4-1/2 year study of adults ranging in age up to middle-age, Australian researchers found that applying broad spectrum sunscreen reduced the signs of aging by 24%.

Sunscreen...don’t leave home without it.

BEAUTY WITH NICOLE--WRINKLE PREVENTION

We’re in the middle of summer. Are you slathering on the sun block? Nothing causes wrinkles like the sun (smoking is a close second.) If you want to stay looking young longer (not to mention preventing skin cancer,) you need to prevent all those harmful UV rays from attacking your skin. Hats and staying under an umbrella at the beach won’t do the job. Even keeping to the shade won’t totally protect you. UV rays can reflect off water, sand, rocks, buildings, and cars. They can even penetrate through your clothing. So make sure you’re using a broad spectrum sun block and reapply periodically while outside. And don’t forget your lips!

Another way to fight wrinkles is to eat foods rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants strengthen your skin and can help ward off aging. You can find antioxidants in foods rich in beta-carotene, lycopene, omega-3 fatty acids, and lutein. There are many foods that contain these antioxidants such as avocados, apples, carrots, apricots, watermelon, cherry tomatoes, fish, and walnuts.

BEAUTY WITH NICOLE -- POSTURE TO PREVENT WRINKLES?

Every once in awhile, one of our editors comes across an interesting study. Today Nicole shares one that at first glance has nothing to do with beauty, but she puts a beauty tip spin to it. -- AP

That’s right, Anastasia. I recently came across an article that cited some newly published research about posture. We all know that poor posture can cause body aches and pains. It’s also been linked to joint problems and arthritis. However, according to this new research, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, posture also affects your mind. Standing tall with your shoulders back (remember how your mom always told you not to slouch?) makes a person feel more in control and more able to handle stress.

Now here’s the beauty spin: We all know that stress can age us. It shows on our faces. So by practicing good posture, we might just keep those worry lines at bay. Hey, it’s worth a try, right?

Sounds good to me, Nicole, and if it works, think of what you could save on wrinkle creams. Thoughts, readers?
Post a comment to enter the drawing for a book from our guest author on Friday. -- AP

BEAUTY WITH NICOLE - DE-STRESS FOR BEAUTY

Did you know that stress can age you? I figure I must be 726 years old by now. (Don’t believe me? You obviously haven’t read Assault With a Deadly Glue Gun and Death By Killer Mop Doll.) Today, beauty editor Nicole Emmerling offers a simple beauty tip for de-stressing. -- AP

That’s right, Anastasia. When we’re stressed, we tend to clench our jaw and grind our teeth. Not only does this tension cause jaw pain, tooth pain, and headaches, it can also cause wrinkles. Here’s a two minute beauty treatment to help you relax those tense muscles.

Cut two slices of cold cucumber. Lie down and place the slices on your eyes. The cold will help soothe your strained eye and face muscles, thus relaxing your face. It also fights puffiness and inflammation.

While you’re lying with the cucumbers on your eyes, use your index fingers to press down firmly and make circular motions up and down your jaw between your ear and chin.
