AN INTERVIEW WITH SPECIAL AGENT TYLER CONRAD FROM ANGEL BRAVE BY AUTHOR VIJAYA SCHARTZ

Today we sit down for a chat with Special Agent Tyler Conrad from
Angel Brave by sci-fi romance author Vijaya Schartz.

What was your life like before your author started pulling your strings?

Well, I was born on Corabora Prime. My parents were explorers and adventurers. I accompanied them on safaris on wild planets… until the accident. As a young man I joined the military. When offered a special agent position for Internal Affairs, I couldn’t resist. Ever since, I’ve worked undercover to expose those who take advantage of their position to profit, exploit, or sometimes even betray the society I protect.

What’s the one trait you like most about yourself?

I’m an excellent investigator, and to this day, I’ve never failed to catch the culprits. I believe in justice. All crimes should be punished. But it can be a curse. Because of my skills, I never have a minute to myself. Oh, and my ex-girlfriend Akira thinks I’m a hopeless romantic. I don’t know why. Maybe because I let her smuggle an abused child and his protector out of Byzantium in the last book. Sometimes, it’s more important to do the right thing rather than the lawful thing. Children should never be made into weapons of mass destruction… but that was in book 2, Akira’s Choice.

What do you like least about yourself?

It bugs me that I’m always attracted to strong, extraordinary, unattainable women, who have no room in their lives for relationships. I also don’t like cats. Most people don’t understand that. In my defense, I was attacked and mauled by a lion as a child. My body healed, but to this day, even small cats make me feel like prey.

What is the strangest thing your author has had you do or had happen to you?

Well, I’m genetically enhanced. As a kid, after almost dying under a lion’s claws and fangs, I had my DNA re-sequenced to regrow my torn limbs. So, I’m taller, stronger, smarter, and I like to believe handsomer than most men my age… but that’s not in my official files. It happened a long time ago, in some obscure star system of the fringe.

Do you argue with your author? If so, what do you argue about?

She tends to make me weak. Why does she insist on giving me flaws? I’d rather be perfect. Given a choice, wouldn’t you?

What is your greatest fear?

Well, there is the lion thing, of course. Big cats scare the heck out of me… although I’m getting better at controlling my reaction to them.

What makes you happy?

The simple things in life. A good meal at Chef Bonaventure, Pythian beef is my favorite, catching the bad guy, the love and respect of a beautiful woman like Lady Malaika. She’s a true angel.

If you could rewrite a part of your story, what would it be? Why?

The lion attack, What a traumatic incident. It’s embarrassing to have a paralyzing fear of cats… especially big cats. It’s humiliating for a grown man, especially in front of the woman you want to impress.

Of the other characters in your book, which one bugs you the most? Why?

Admiral Mort Lowell, my direct superior. I thought he was a standup guy, despite his scary looks. Yes, he’s a hybrid, half Human and half Tenebran. Raised on a dark moon, he is oversensitive to light, so he wears a black visor. I’ve never seen his eyes. Some call him the Vampire, others call him the Shark, because of his pale skin and sharp, pointed teeth. Apparently, he belongs to the Stygian Order, a dark group that infiltrated the GTA, and he's selling out the Human race to some dark immortal entity. And on top of that, he tried to kill me. I can’t stand people with no morals.

Of the other characters in your book, which one would you love to trade places with? Why?

None. I complained a lot in this interview, but all in all, I would never want to be anyone else… except, maybe Raja. Raja is the lion in our story. Although he had a rough start, the beast is set for life as a pampered feline at the side of the wonderful Lady Malaika. Sometimes I’m a little jealous of all the loving attention Raja is getting. But to be fair, now, I’m getting my share, too.

Tell us a little something about your author. Where can readers find her website/blog?

My author is Vijaya Schartz. She’s an award-winning author of fantasy, science fiction, and romance. She had thirty books published so far. Check out her website

What's next for you?

I think I’ll kick back and enjoy my honeymoon with Malaika… although I’m sure it won’t be all play. We have a space station to run. I’ll also watch what happens in my author’s next book. It’s part of the Azura series and is set on the angel planet, not on Byzantium, but it belongs in the same universe. Maybe there will be a small part for me and Malaika in Angel Brave, the next Azura story.

Malaika's Secret

A Byzantium Book 3

Special Agent Tyler Conrad works security undercover on the Byzantium Space Station and adheres to a strict moral code. When strange beings with wings are murdered, and a dangerous lion wanders the station’s indoor streets, Tyler’s investigation leads him to a mysterious woman, who could make him break all his rules and get them both killed.

Forbidden to love, the beautiful Malaika, guardian of the glowing crystal in the temple of the Formless One, is an illegal mind-reader who hides perilous secrets. She has seen the great evil coming to Byzantium but must hide her extraordinary abilities or perish with her people.

When Admiral Mort Lowell, a hybrid Tenebran nicknamed the Vampire, makes a surprise visit to Byzantium, Tyler knows something wicked is afoot…

BOOK CLUB FRIDAY--A CELTIC HALLOWEEN WITH AUTHOR CORNELIA AMIRI

Cornelia Amiri and her muse, Severus the Cat, live amid the hustle and bustle of humid Houston, Texas, as does her wonderful son and granddaughter. She’s currently working on her 40th book —a sci-fi comedy romance with a Celtic goddess as the heroine. Learn more about Cornelia and her books at her website.

Cool Things about Celtic Halloween and a Wolf Shapeshifting God

As an author of Celtic/Paranormal/Romance novels, my favorite holiday is Samhain, the Celtic festival which gives us our Halloween traditions. Samhain, pronounced SOW-uhn, is the Celtic New Year, October 31st or November 1st. Samhain falls between the old year and the new; it is a day without time. Spirits of the dead and supernatural beings easily cross into our earthly dimension on this day, since the veil between worlds is at its thinnest.

In our modern Halloween celebration, one of our favorite supernatural creatures are werewolves. The ancient Celts liked shapeshifters probably even more than we do. All their gods had shape-shifting forms.

For instance, the Welsh God Gwydion, that name means born of trees, which sounds very Druidry and for good reason, he’s basically the druid of the gods.  Along with that, he’s a powerful sorcerer, a master of illusion, a trickster, and a poet.  Plus, one of his main shapeshifting forms is a wolf.

Gwydion is the hero of The Wolf and the Druidess. It’s set at Samhain rather than Halloween and instead of a werewolf, the hero is the Celtic god Gwydion. It’s my version of a sexy, romantic Halloween werewolf tale. And it does have a Little Red Riding Hood vibe.

The Wolf and the Druidess is the first book in my Druidry and the Beast series. All are all set in Iron Age Britain during one of the ancient Celtic festivals. The hero is always a shapeshifter god and the heroine a smart, strong druidess. All the druidesses are from different tribes, so you get to know a little about the tribal culture of those times.

The series is complete at five books. All are available individually or together in a box set

The Wolf and the Druidess

Druidry and the Beast, Book 1

A Celtic Tryst with A Shape Shifter Twist

In days of old, deep in the dark woods, Druidess Seren discovers a wolf shapeshifting into the bare, muscular Celtic God, Gwydion. Seren's mind turns from the Samhain feast to wicked thoughts of Gwydion's gorgeous body. Is the love Gwydion and Seren share strong enough to overcome barriers between an immortal god and a mortal woman? Or will a warning of danger from beyond the grave destroy the sensual magic brewing between the wolf and the druidess?

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE AUTHOR JOANIE MACNEIL IS INSPIRED BY THE GREEK ISLAND OF RHODES

Joanie Macneil is an Australian author of contemporary romance. Her novels are a mix of sweet and sexy feel-good stories. Though most are set in Australia, she loves to travel and has set some of her stories in places she’s visited. Learn more about Joanie and her books at her website.

Choosing the right setting for a story

My latest release, Mandraki Magicis a sweet romance, set in the medieval Old Town on the Greek Island of Rhodes.

Originally, I planned to write the novella with a summer beach theme and a touch of magic as part of an anthology for my writers’ group. When the project folded, I wrote the story anyway.

I wanted to keep the theme, but when the elements of the story wouldn’t gel, I decided to switch location. What better place for romance than the walled Old Town with its many historical gates? Though I’d visited Rhodes a few months prior, I hadn’t previously considered setting my story there.

The colorful and narrow stone streets lined with boutiques, eateries, and other tourist shops provided an ideal setting. The small restaurant where we stopped for lunch offered outdoor seating and an opportunity to relax and soak up the sunshine and atmosphere while observing passers-by. The venue where my major characters worked was based loosely on this restaurant and its location.

The yummy Greek salad of olives, salad vegetables, and feta cheese was both tasty and healthy. Some patrons were in for a surprise when they ordered jugs of beer. The amber liquid, served in clear glass boots, caused quite a commotion, both for cost and the unusual serving vessel.

I soaked up the local life in that section of the Old Town as I walked further along the street and surrounding areas. Beneath a huge spreading tree, brightly colored macaws perched in wait for admiring tourists. Cats ran from everywhere at the sound of loud banging, nearby traders calling them for dinner. This added to the ambience of the setting for Mandraki Magic.

Character images from Pinterest and my own photos as background helped bring the story and setting to life.

About Rhodes

The island of Rhodes is mountainous and rugged with many beautiful, isolated, sandy beaches. Anthony Quinn Beach (or Bay) was named for the actor who featured in the movie Guns of Navarone. Some of the scenes were filmed on Rhodes. Along the coast, the tourist hotels and amusements were closed as the summer was almost over. That seemed premature given the weather was still perfect and warm.

Though there is much to see in the Old Town with its ancient buildings, busy shopping streets and colorful locals, my visit was too short to cover them all.

Maybe one day I’ll return to explore more of the historical sites.

Information on Rhodes can be found at the following sites:

Rhodes has a long and colourful history. The island is also known as The Island of the Knights, named after the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who ruled the island from 1310 to 1522. Historically, Rhodes island was very famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient WorldThe Medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site.

#CRAFTS WITH ANASTASIA--SHELL ORNAMENTS AND AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM YA AUTHOR LIZ LOROW

Over the years Ashlyn Chase has been on occasional guest here, both as a romance author and as an author of YA magical realism as Liz Lorow. Today she’s here to talk about her newest Liz Lorow book and announce a major career change. Learn more about Liz at her website.

Live and Let Witch is here! I hadn’t planned on writing this book, but the main character really wanted me to tell her story. Live and Let Witch is book 2 of The Witches You Were Warned About duo. The ebook version of first book, Don’t Mess With This Witch, is currently on sale.

I hope you’ll read one or both books and enjoy the mayhem!

Now, the surprising announcement. This will be my last novel. I am retiring from writing. I’ll need to do something else though, because as much as I love watching HGTV, that won’t keep me occupied for long. I’m someone who needs to do something meaningful, enjoyable, and fulfilling. I love to decorate shells, and since I live right on the Gulf of Mexico, I have an entire treasure trove of shells outside to keep me busy.

Another idea I had was to make book covers for my Indie author friends. My agent even said they’d commission some for their new venture called Ally, an assisted self-publishing option. Their contact info as well as mine can be found on my website. http://eblorow.com  I made both covers for The Witches You Were Warned About books, as well as some for my Ashlyn Chase pen name. I keep my sexy adult romances separate from my young adult fantasies by using two separate names. It’s a lot to keep track of, but I think it’s important to be clear about what you’re buying.

Have a fabulous October!

Live and Let Witch

#COOKING WITH CLORIS--MYSTERY AUTHOR KATIE GRAYKOWSKI TAKES US ON A BAKING JOURNEY

Bestselling author Katie Graykowski has published more than twenty novels. She likes sassy heroines, Mexican food, glitter nail polish, and red velvet cake—even if she fails at baking them. Today she joins us to share a successful cake recipe. Learn more about her and her books at her website.

When Mustang Ridges, my heroine, needs comfort food, she turns to cupcakes. As long as they aren’t vegan, any flavor will do. But her favorite is red velvet.

Just like my heroine, I love red velvet cupcakes. So why, do you ask, is the recipe below for strawberry cupcakes?

The truth is … I make the worst red velvet cake in the world. As an amateur baker, I’ve tried dozens of red velvet cake recipes, and they all end up dry, flavorless, and dense.

My husband’s grandmother, Nell Deplantis, made the best red velvet cake ever. We lost her a few years ago, and she took her red velvet cake recipe with her to heaven. I did get her potato salad recipe, so there’s that.

In my ever-ending quest for the perfect red velvet, I combined several different recipes. Normally, this yields fantastic desserts like double cheesecake brownies, chocolate rum tres leches cake, and chocolate covered strawberry custard parfaits.

So armed with my Frankenstein-ed red velvet cake recipe, I committed one entire Sunday to the creation of red velvet perfection.

Just look at the fantastic cake above.

I even made extra frosting.

And then I cut a piece. Not only was it dry enough to suck the spit out of my mouth, but it tasted like vinegar and salt. Here’s what happened to that cake.

To add insult to injury, I managed to get red food coloring on the bottom of my shoes so my kitchen floor looked like a murder scene. Did I mention I have concrete floors? Anyway, red velvet is permanently off my baking list.

Moving right along … strawberry cupcakes. This is what I make for myself on my birthday.

Strawberry Cupcakes

Ingredients:

I cup frozen strawberries*

2-1/2 cups flour

1-1/4 cups sugar

3 oz. box strawberry Jello

4 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

12 tbsp. butter (softened to room temperature)

3/4 cup juice from frozen berries

1/2 cup buttermilk

1/2 tsp. vanilla

4 large eggs

Frosting ingredients:

2 sticks butter, softened

10 oz. frozen strawberries, drained

2 lbs. powdered sugar

* NOTE: Defrost strawberries ahead of time and allow to warm to room temperature. Drain berry water but retain for recipe.

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour three 8-inch pans.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, Jello, baking powder, and salt. Whisk to combine. Add softened butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until butter is incorporated and soft crumbs form. It will look like sand. Add water from frozen strawberries, buttermilk, and vanilla to the crumbly mixture and mix to combine. Add the eggs one at a time and mix well. Scrape down sides of the bowl as needed. DO NOT OVERMIX.

Divide evenly between the 3 pans. Bake 18-20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Or if you're making cupcakes, line the cupcake tins with cupcake wrappers and remember to grease those too. After baking, for layer cakes, remove from pans, cool and then frost. It's okay to leave the cupcakes in the pans to cool.

To make frosting, dump everything in a bowl and mix well. Spread on cooled cakes.

So what if my birthday is next month. Birthday candles are always a good idea.

PTO Murder Club Boxed Set

Rest In Pieces

Mustang Ridges isn’t a town, a stripper, or some old western movie. She’s a feisty, single mom living in the small town of Lakeside, Texas where money does buy happiness and keeping up appearances is much more important than the truth. Six months ago on her thirtieth birthday, her husband decided that married life, fatherhood, and his job as the Lakeside Chief of Police weren’t as exciting as a permanent vacation to Grand Cayman with his mistress and a million dollars in diamonds he stole from the police evidence lockup.

This makes Mustang a pariah in a Lakeside full of piranha. But she refuses to leave. If she can’t join them, then she’ll beat them at their own game. With a little luck, some intimidation, and the help of her good friends Monica and Haley, Mustang presides over her own little slice of Lakeside, the Bee Creek Elementary Parent Teacher Organization.

All is quiet in Lakeside until Molly Miars, the kindergarten teacher, is found dead. According to the new police chief, she overdosed on heroin. That doesn’t explain why her head was the only body part to make it to her funeral.

Vowing to do right by Molly, the PTO decides to investigate.

What do money laundering, a castor oil plant, gold coins, and a kindergarten teacher have in common? Mustang must figure it out before the killer finds her.

Blown To Pieces

After restauranteur, Big Tommy Prather, is blown to pieces in his front yard, Mustang Ridges and her two best friends are on the case. While the local police have ruled the death an accident, Mustang and the girls suspect murder. They can prove it…sort of.

As the small community of Lakeside, Texas mourns the loss of one of its most beloved citizens, Mustang, Haley, and Monica do their level best to find someone who might want Big Tommy dead. Only…every single person they interview, loves Big Tommy.

What do missing people, a chili parlor, and audio cassette tapes have in common? Mustand must figure it out before her best friend is blown to pieces.

Just One Piece

When Mustang Ridges receives a severed penis in the mail, she knows it's going to be a bad day. She's sure there's a body to go along with the penis, but she can't find it.

While on the hunt for the owner of the penis, she stumbles across a dead body. It's Jane Dough, a substitute teacher at Lakeside Elementary. The Lakeside Elementary PTO is on the case. It appears that Jane might have been a prostitute who supplemented her income with a little substitute teaching on the side. After vowing to vet substitute teachers more carefully, Mustang goes head-to-head with the brothel’s madam.

What do a severed penis, a dead body, and a brothel have in common? Mustang must figure it out before the killer sends her another body part.

Bits And Pieces

When Mustang Ridge’s son goes off to middle school, all she wants to do is drown her anxiety with a gallon of coffee and a dozen red velvet cupcakes. Unfortunately, someone has bought all of the cupcakes at Lakeside Cupcakes except for the nasty vegan ones. She may be desperate, but she’s not that desperate. As she walks back to her car, something large falls from the sky and crashes onto the roof of her car.

It’s a body.

It seems like she’s always stumbling over bodies, but now they’re falling from the sky?

The body currently acting as her new hood ornament turns out to be Marty Smith, the man everyone hates … especially, Jill, the owner of Lakeside Cupcakes. After she’s arrested for his murder, she offers Mustang a lifetime supply of free cupcakes if she finds out who really killed Marty.

Mustang and the girls are on the case. They start questioning suspects and have a hard to finding anyone who doesn’t want Marty dead.

What do a Voodoo Priestess, a possible serial killer with a Barbie fetish, and the island of Bonaire have in common? Mustang must figure it out before Marty’s killer finds her.

#CRAFTS WITH ANASTASIA--MYSTERY AUTHOR JEANNETTE DE BEAUVOIR'S SLEUTH TAKES A BREAK FROM MURDER AND DISCOVERS A HOBBY

Jeannette de Beauvoir didn’t set out to murder anyone—some things are just meant to be! Her mother introduced her to the Golden Age of mystery fiction when she was far too young to be reading it, and she’s kept following those authors and many like them ever since. She wrote historical and literary fiction and poetry for years before someone asked her what she read—and she realized mystery was where her heart was. Now working on the Sydney Riley Provincetown mystery series, she bumps off a resident or visitor to her hometown on a regular basis. Learn more about Jeannette and her books at her website.

Taking a Break From Murder… With Crafts!

Wedding planner and super-sleuth Sydney Riley is looking ahead to the winter, the “quiet season” in her hometown on Cape Cod, and has decided that what she needs is a hobby. Winters are a nice respite from the tourist season, but the days are long and dark, and even Sydney admits there’s just so much reading you can do. Inspired by Anastasia Pollock’s crafty ways, Sydney decided to try doing something completely different with her time and energy (usually she reserves both for solving murders!), and then she couldn’t wait to share her first efforts with Anastasia.

“It’s not exactly art,” Sydney told her best friend, Mirela, who actually is an artist. “Of course it is,” said Mirela. “It is called decorative art, sunshine.”

Mirela is from Bulgaria and thinks “sunshine” is an endearment. She’s never really caught onto the irony of it.

Sydney decided to start small—after all, she doesn’t really know if she’s going to take to this enterprise—and so has begun by playing with mirrors and picture frames she finds at thrift shops and yard sales. She cleans the pieces and then hot-glues artifacts to them: coins, seashells, sea glass, whatever strikes her fancy, creating a one-of-a-kind decorative conversation piece.

Sydney’s first project was a gift, a request from a priest friend who wanted a frame. Sydney removed the mirror and created this frame encrusted with religious artifacts to encircle the priest’s favorite icon. What do you think of it?

“What on earth are you doing?” asked Ali, Sydney’s boyfriend. “Where did you get these ideas?”

“It’s a matter of availability,” said Sydney. And it’s true that Provincetown is filled with the raw materials she needs and then some. A walk on the beach—any beach—provides shells, pebbles, and sea glass. The Shell Shop across from the Provincetown Town Hall has hundreds of different shells, seahorses, shark’s teeth, starfish, and so much more that she found herself entranced and stayed in the shop for an hour. (She also has to work fast, since The Shell Shop is seasonal only, and due to close soon!)

Then there’s Marine Specialties, Ptown’s go-to shop for anything a little out of the ordinary—it’s been a landmark for more than fifty-five years. Often known simply as “the army-navy store,” it is an eclectic trove of salvage, surplus, closeouts, overruns, misprints, mistakes, spare parts, odd lots, cast-offs, and new and nearly-new items. What artisan could ask for more?

She’s had to take time off from her new hobby—because this year’s Women’s Week has brought a little more mayhem than usual when the Underground Railroad, a tainted legacy, and a murderer all come together and it’s up to Sydney to unravel what’s going on in The Lethal Legacy, the seventh book in the Sydney Riley Provincetown mystery series. But you can be sure that with winter coming, there will be a lot more decorate art projects to occupy the sleuth!

The Lethal Legacy

A Sydney Riley Provincetown Mystery, Book 7

Despite a slew of weddings to coordinate, Sydney Riley refuses to miss the Women’s Community Dinner—the high point of Women’s Week. During the festivities, she meets vocalist Jordan Bellefort, a direct descendant of a fugitive slave whose diaries suggest the Race Point Inn was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Then Jordan’s wife, Reggie, is murdered while Jordan performs onstage before a crowd of adoring fans. When Sydney probes Reggie’s death, she uncovers a tainted legacy that may provide a motive for the killing and place her own life at risk.

The Lethal Legacy explores the past’s influence on the present in a world-famous seaside resort with a rich history of diversity and acceptance. This seventh book in the Provincetown mystery series maintains the masterful blend of gripping suspense and unique characters Sydney Riley readers have come to expect.
